Adapting CBT to Treat Anxiety and Depression in Adults with Co-Morbid Autism Spectrum Disorders

  • PsychConsulting in Melbourne, Australia Live on Zoom Melbourne Australia (map)

Mental health practitioners are increasingly seeing adults in their therapy settings who have autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as a co-morbid condition with the anxiety or mood disorder for which they sought treatment. There has been a broadening of how autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been defined over the last 20 years, which has contributed to the growing number of adults who are bright, verbal and functioning independently in many areas. These individuals may or may not have been diagnosed previously with ASD, and when they develop anxiety or depression, they often appear in therapy settings that are not autism specialty clinics. This workshop will address this trend by providing guidelines on how to recognize the ASD and formulate an appropriate treatment plan. Practitioners who have expertise in CBT already have a skill set that can be very useful for people on the spectrum who are struggling with anxiety and depression, and the presence of an ASD need not be a barrier to treatment. This workshop will provide an overview and guidelines for applying CBT to these clients.
